Alternative Camp aims to achieve certain standards in the facilities in which it provides services. The following are a list of the categories that Alternative Camp takes into consideration before opening a new camp in a new location.
Architectural
Alternative Camp is a living space where people with special needs feel themselves more equal, more free and more human. All the physical conditions are arranged in accordance with everyone’s mobility conditions. In open space, wheel-chair users should be able to move around without the help of an assistant, this is achieved by ramps and bars. In places of accommodation, arrangements are made so that all disability groups can access their rooms with ease. (ie; door width change, special bathroom arrangements and etc.) If Alternative Camp is built on an empty area the complex should be 100% in accordance with international standards for handicapped people. If a building is being restored, priority is given to buildings with suitable conditions and further changes would be made to make it more suitable for handicapped people. The goal is independent mobility and easy access to social and sportive activities for everyone.
Logistics
Camps preferably should be located close to city centers with easy access to airports, train and bus stations.
Ownership
In the first place Alternative Camp aims to own a space and building of its own however if a place is being rented the conditions should be so that Alternative Camp is a tenant for a long period. Changes made to make the place more suitable for handicapped people should be specified in the contract.
Transfer
Easy access is the top priority. The camp space should be located to ensure that handicapped people won’t have to travel for too long to reach it. Participating groups need to provide their own transportation. In cases where groups need to reach the camp from airports or transfer is necessary, Alternative Camp will provide it.
Healthcare
Due to the special conditions of our visitors, healthcare is one of the most important services provided by Alternative Camp. The camp should have an infirmary and should have an institutional agreement with a healthcare provider. In the personnel and the volunteer squad, Alternative Camp should have a doctor present at all times. Alternative Camps in addition should have arrangements with local healthcare providers which in case of emergency would provide free of charge healthcare service to its visitors.
Technology
Alternative Camp has internet which is used for purposes of education and communication not for recreational purposes.
Media Relations
Alternative Camp takes media relations very seriously in its effort to create social awareness. Alternative Camp strives to develop good relations with both the national and international media to publicize its cause by means of the internet, radio and television and in press. Alternative Camp also tries to make documentaries, support exhibitions to participate in film festivals. It also participates in workshops, seminars and conferences in and outside of Turkey. |
